Safety
Glass

Safety glass is designed to reduce the risk of injury where glazing may be subject to human impact. Unlike standard float glass, safety glass is manufactured to break in a way that minimises the risk of cutting and piercing injuries, making it suitable for a wide range of residential and commercial applications.

What is Safety Glass?

Safety glass is glazing that has been manufactured or treated to improve safety if breakage occurs — depending on the product, this may involve heat treatment, lamination or a combination of both. Safety glazing is commonly used for shower screens, glass balustrades, pool fencing, commercial windows and doors, glass partitions, shopfronts and internal glazing. The type of safety glass required will depend on the application and should be selected in accordance with the relevant Australian Standards.

Safety Glass Standards

The selection and installation of safety glass in buildings is governed by Australian Standards, including AS 1288 (Glass in Buildings — Selection and Installation) and AS/NZS 2208 (Safety Glazing Materials in Buildings). The appropriate glass product will depend on the application, location and project requirements — final glass selection should always be confirmed by the project's designer, engineer or qualified glazier.
