IGU Components

Every ToughEco™ insulated glass unit is manufactured using premium components selected to achieve the required thermal, acoustic and structural performance.

The combination of glass, spacer systems, gas fill and sealants all contribute to the overall performance and longevity of the finished unit.

Glass

The glass selected plays a significant role in the overall performance of an insulated glass unit. ToughEco™ can be manufactured using a wide range of Tough Glass products, including Clear, Tinted, Decorative, ToughGuard™, ToughSound™, ToughSwitch™ and KeneticPlus Glass , allowing each insulated glass unit to be tailored to suit the project's performance requirements.

Spacer Systems

Spacer systems separate the panes of glass to create the insulating cavity within the insulated glass unit. The spacer selected influences the thermal performance by reducing heat transfer around the edge of the glazing.

Our standard warm edge spacer system, TPS provides outstanding thermal performance, excellent durability and improved energy efficiency. As our preferred spacer system, it offers superior thermal efficiency and is used as the standard spacer throughout the ToughEco™ range.

Super Spacer® is a flexible warm edge spacer system that provides excellent thermal performance while helping to reduce condensation and improve the overall energy efficiency of the insulated glass unit.

A traditional spacer option suitable for applications where a conventional spacer system is preferred.

Gas Fill

The cavity between the panes can be filled with either air or Argon gas. Argon provides improved thermal insulation compared to air, helping increase the overall energy efficiency of the insulated glass unit.

Secondary Sealants

Secondary sealants provide structural strength while protecting the insulated glass unit from moisture ingress and long-term environmental exposure.

Our standard secondary sealant, providing excellent durability and long-term performance.

A fast-curing secondary sealant suitable for a wide range of insulated glass applications.

A high-performance structural sealant used where increased UV resistance, weatherability or structural glazing performance is required.

Performance Definitions

VLT

Visible Light Transmission – The percentage of visible light transmitted through the glass.

VLR

Visible Light Reflectance – The percentage of visible light reflected from the glass surface.

SHGC

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient – Measures how much solar heat passes through the glass. Lower values provide better solar control.

U-Value

Measures heat transfer through the glazing. Lower values indicate better insulating performance.

Acoustic Performance

Insulated glass units can significantly improve acoustic performance when compared to single glazing. Further improvements can be achieved by varying glass thicknesses, increasing the cavity width or incorporating TG Sound acoustic laminated glass into the insulated glass unit.

Rw (Weighted Sound Reduction Index) is the standard measurement used to rate the sound insulation performance of glazing. The higher the Rw value, the greater the glass's ability to reduce the transmission of airborne noise.

Frequently Asked Questions

An insulated glass unit (IGU) is the technical name for what is commonly referred to as double glazing. It consists of two or more panes of glass separated by a sealed spacer and insulating cavity to improve thermal and acoustic performance.

Unlike standard off-the-shelf double glazing, every ToughEco™ insulated glass unit is custom manufactured in Perth, Western Australia to suit your project's specific performance requirements. With multiple Low-E options, custom laminated glass, decorative glass, acoustic glass and a range of spacer systems available, ToughEco™ provides a tailored glazing solution rather than a one-size-fits-all product.

Yes. ToughEco™ insulated glass units can be manufactured using a wide range of glass types, thicknesses, spacer options and gas fills to suit your project's performance requirements.

Argon is an inert gas used within the cavity of an insulated glass unit to improve thermal insulation. When combined with Low-E glass, it helps reduce heat transfer and improve the overall energy efficiency of the window.

Warm Edge spacers are manufactured from less conductive materials than traditional aluminium spacers, helping to reduce heat transfer around the edge of the insulated glass unit and improve overall thermal performance.

Each ToughEco™ product is designed to suit different performance requirements. ToughEco™ Lite – Standard insulated glass unit without Low-E coatings. ToughEco™ Tech – Incorporates KeneticPlus hard coat Low-E glass. ToughEco™ Plus – Features a premium single silver soft coat Low-E glass. ToughEco™ Platinum – Our highest-performing IGU, incorporating double silver soft coat Low-E glass in either Clear or Neutral options. If you're unsure which product is best suited to your project, our team can recommend the most appropriate solution.

Yes. The width of the spacer cavity influences the thermal and acoustic performance of the insulated glass unit. Our team can recommend the most appropriate cavity size based on your project requirements.

Yes. ToughEco™ insulated glass units can contribute to improving the thermal performance of a home and may assist in meeting the energy efficiency requirements for 7-Star NatHERS-rated homes . The most suitable ToughEco™ configuration will depend on the project's glazing design, orientation, framing system and overall building performance.
