What type of glass is safe to use in a shower screen? Grade A safety glass should always be used in shower screens. Most often toughened glass will be used, if broken, toughened glass will shatter into small particles opposed to large, sharp shards like that of annealed glass. Toughened glass is up to five times stronger than annealed glass. On some occasions laminated glass may be used in fully framed shower screen options. Laminated glass is also a type of Grade A safety glass, but edges cannot be exposed in wet/ high moisture areas as the PVB interlayer can de-laminate over time.
Can a shower screen be made to size from building plans? A shower screen can be quoted from building plans but most often a glazier will complete an onsite measure after tiling has been completed in the bathroom or ensuite prior to ordering the shower screen. This is best practice in case opening sizes change or the opening is slightly out of square to guarantee a flush, customised fit. Once glass has been cut and toughened, changes can not be made (even if you need to reduce the size) making it an expensive exercise if shower glass needs to be re-ordered.
How do I go about installation? Tough Glass are specialists in processing and supply of glass products and do not install finished products. We do have an extensive range of clients qualified to undertake on site measures and installation we can happily recommend. Contact us.
Regardless of the glass shower screen application you select it is best to consult with a qualified glazier who can provide advice on selection and installation of glass and glazing whilst ensuring regulations are met and safety is not compromised.
